A touch of History

The PT/OT courses were initially affiliated to Jadavpur University in Calcutta. However in the following years differences in ideological principles between the University and the Institute led to the courses being de-affiliated by the University. Subsequently affiliation was sought from the medical faculty of the University of Calcutta which though approved in principal, did not materialize until 1990. In this confusion of changing affiliations, the classes of 1988 and 1989 were coolly admitted into Diploma programs instead of the Bachelors' and students were promised that the Diplomas would eventually be converted to Bachelors' upon receiving affiliations from the University of Calcutta then supposedly in the works. Yet when two years passed by without promises being kept, a popular student uprising forced the institute and the University of Calcutta to the negotiations table where a historic and unprecedented conclusion was reached and the University agreed to convert the existing Diploma courses to Bachelor's level within framework of rules of the University requiring extra duration  and subjects to be covered within a given time of one year after completion of the Diplomas. So goes the legend that the handful of students of the classes of 1988 and 1989, together pressurized an entire University into a legitimate action by way of reason.
