Institute Profile

The National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped (or NIOH) an apex institute in the Country, was established in the year 1987 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. It is committed to manpower development, to develop model services, conduct research, standardize aids and appliances for the persons with orthopedic disabilities. So came about this apex organization which today serves a
staggering number of patients per unit of time ! As an example, one of the busiest departments of the institute, the Department of Physiotherapy attends to between one and three hundred patients a day ! All this and more at what price ? Not too much; actually quite reasonably this medical care is all free. Yes you heard it right. Free ! So can you go out and splurge? Well not quite. There is in the fine print of course!

Set on over 22 acres of land, NIOH is a small community within itself. There is the main building which is home to the management on the second level. The first level or the ground floor has the various patient services, including the medical outdoor and the pathology laboratory, the departments of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech, Language and Hearing, and finally the Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering workshop.

The offices of the Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation or ALIMCOŽ is on the first level.

Behind the main residential building the Institute has been
constructing new buildings which will eventually house several other projects and also the regional centers of the other National Institutes as mentioned above.

Elsewhere, within the campus, the institute has residences for its own staff and also an extensive hostel system for the students of the various professional courses run by the Institute which is now a clinical affiliate to The University of Calcutta. For detailed information on the institute's activities and services, please explore this web in its entirety.

Under the objective of providing & developing model rehabilitation services for the person with disabilities in the out reach areas, we organize service cum training camps in different parts of the country . We propose to organize at least one camp in your state in this financial year and likely to cover and benefit 400-500 disabled during five day camp. The program will be organized in collaboration with the state Govt. & NGOs. The date / venue etc. may be finalized in consultation with the State Govt.

To involve the local available resources both manpower / professional and infrastructure and make the services cost effective and sustainable, we propose to prepare a panel of available professionals in the area who may be used subsequently in such programs and follow-ups.
