Orthosis is a device applied directly and externally to the patient's body with the objective of supporting, correcting or compensating for a deformity or weakness. It may be applied with the additional objective of assisting, allowing or restricting, movement of the body. The term orthotics covers the theory and practice of prescription, fitting, design assessment and production of orthosis.

A Prothesis is an artificial replacement or substitute for a loss in part of full, of a limb (extremity) due to congenital or acquired cause.

The profession got its recognition due to sudden increase in no. of cases requiring prosthetic and orthotic services as a result of the World War and specifically to India due to war in the early seventies. With the development of Medical Science and need to improve quality of life, the necessity of such professionals is increasing world wide.

The qualified student of Prosthetics & Orthotics has a wide scope in the hospitals, trauma centres, rehabilitation centres and academic institutions.
